Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters: Painting with Lemurs & Feeding Sloths at Chase Sanctuary

Up-close with endangered lemurs at Chase Sanctuary—an ethical wildlife experience supporting conservation.

Introduction

There’s something truly magical about getting up close and personal with wildlife—especially when your experience helps protect critically endangered species. During one of my solo travel adventures, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Chase Sanctuary, a hidden gem dedicated to wildlife conservation in Florida. From painting with lemurs—an experience that helps fund conservation efforts through visitor donations—to feeding sloths and anteaters, this unforgettable day felt like stepping into a real-life nature documentary.

If you’re a travel enthusiast, aspiring entrepreneur, or someone looking for a meaningful side hustle, keep reading—because this trip also ties into my journey as a home-based Travel Marketing Rep and Advisor, and it could inspire a new adventure for you too!

Let’s wander together 🧭

Chase Sanctuary: A Conservation Haven

Chase Sanctuary, located in Florida, is home to critically endangered species and vital conservation work.

Chase Sanctuary is a non-profit wildlife conservancy dedicated to preserving critically endangered species, including cotton-top tamarins, red ruffed lemurs, and black-and-white ruffed lemurs. Their mission goes beyond rescue—they collaborate with zoological facilities around the world to share data, animals, and resources to prevent extinction. For example, they’ve worked to support breeding programs for species like the red ruffed lemur, which is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.

One way they raise funds? By offering intimate wildlife experiences that connect visitors with animals in meaningful, educational, and ethical ways. These experiences indirectly support conservation by generating vital operational income.

💡 Pro Tip: All experiences must be pre-purchased and scheduled in advance, and it’s best to book at least 2–4 weeks ahead, especially during holidays or peak seasons due to limited availability.

Booking, Rules & What to Know

Here are some helpful tips before your visit:

  • 📅 Limited spots: Each session is small to protect the animals and keep the experience intimate.
  • 📷 No personal cameras: This policy ensures animal safety. Don’t worry—they provide free professional photos via email (usually within a week, though timing may vary since the staff is entirely volunteer-based).
  • 🐾 Hands-off policy: While feeding animals like sloths and anteaters is allowed, touching the sloths is not permitted to ensure their comfort and safety.

Painting with Lemurs: Unleashing Wild Creativity

This was not your typical art class. The lemurs had full control of the room, swinging around and investigating our painting stations. Each participant received a canvas and some fruit to entice our fuzzy friends into “collaborating.”

Yes, the lemurs actually help paint! These animal-safe, hands-on sessions are unforgettable.

🏷️ Fun Fact: All paint is non-toxic, animal-safe, and water-based—specifically labeled as compliant with ASTM D-4236 standards, which means it’s safe for use around animals and children.

📌 After painting, we explored the on-site gift shop, where every purchase supports the sanctuary. I picked up a few unique items to remember this incredible experience.

Feeding Anteaters and Sloths: Nature Up Close

Next, we moved on to the sloth and anteater encounter.

Feeding moments like this create lasting memories—and help fund animal care.

🐜 Feeding an Anteater: One particularly curious anteater even climbed on me for more snacks—adorable and unforgettable!

🦥 Sloths: Though we couldn’t touch them, feeding them up close was peaceful and mesmerizing. Watching their slow movements was like a meditation on patience.

🐦 Bird Interactions: Throughout both sessions, we also interacted with friendly birds, like a charming cockatiel and other tropical species.

A friendly cockatiel added some feathered fun to the experience!

A Heartwarming Surprise: Holding a Baby Lemur

A once-in-a-lifetime moment—holding a baby lemur under supervised care.

Just when I thought my day was complete, a docent brought out two baby lemurs! Because these little ones were being hand-raised for health reasons, we got to hold them briefly. It was an emotional, once-in-a-lifetime moment I’ll never forget.
