If you’re looking for a day trip that mixes thrill, tranquility, and a taste of the unexpected, Kentucky’s Red River Gorge delivers all that and more. I went down for what I thought would be a simple underground tour—and ended up with a full day of ziplining, great food, new friends, and a spontaneous adventure I’ll never forget.
🚤 Underground Boat Tour: Crystal Clear Calm Beneath the Earth
The underground flooded mine tour at Red River Gorge is a must-see. The water is so still and clear it feels like glass, and the center of the boat has a plexiglass panels so you can see everything right below your feet. The lighting, the echoes, and the sheer peacefulness of it all—truly unforgettable.
I had looked into the crystal-clear kayak tours, which are stunning—but many people don’t realize they book out up to a year in advance. Even the regular kayak tours go quickly. Since I didn’t want to wait months for the experience, I grabbed a boat tour spot—and I’m glad I did.
The boat holds about 20 people, and one of the best parts was the shared experience:
- You can hear the guide clearly the whole time.
- You’re close enough to chat with fellow travelers.

- Often booked a year in advance
- Great for solitude, photo ops, and adventure
- This is a smaller group tour up to 8 people, a little more intimate, and a mor private tour
Boat Tour (What I Chose)
- Also fill up fast, so book early
- Available more often, sometimes (occasionally they open more up)
- Great if you’re traveling solo, with a group, or prefer low-impact options
- You’ll have more opportunity to connect with others and hear the guide without distraction
Whether you paddle or float, the underground beauty is unforgettable. But if you’re looking for a way to relax, enjoy the conversation, and be fully immersed in the storytelling, the boat tour might be the perfect place to start.
💨 Ziplining: The Longest, the Highest, and the Race Between
After my underground tour was secured, I decided—why not add some adrenaline to the day?
There are five zip lines, and while each one has its charm, Zip #4 and Zip #5 are the headliners:
- Zip #4: The longest zipline of the set and—hands down—the best view. You’re flying over cliffs and treetops, and the scenery is breathtaking.
- Zip #5: The highest zipline, giving you a thrilling launch with another epic view.
- These two zips are set up as a side-by-side racing line, which makes for a fun twist:

🍖 Dinner With a View: Red Point BBQ
With time to spare before my boat ride, I stopped for dinner at Red Point BBQ—and I couldn’t have asked for a better spot.
- The ribs and mac & cheese were on point
- I topped it off with cookies and cream gelato and warm peach cobbler
- Dog-friendly patio with a gorgeous view out back
- Friendly, helpful staff
💡 Local Tip: If you’re bringing your dog, this is a solid stop. Grab a table on the patio and relax after your adventures.
🧭 Travel Tips for Visiting Red River Gorge
✅ Cell service is spotty. Download maps and directions in advance.
✅ GPS may cut out—have a plan for arrival and departure.
✅ Cash is still a good backup, but many places now accept Venmo and other digital payments.
✅ Some roads are narrow or gravel, especially close to adventure sites. Drive slowly and watch for one-lane stretches.
✅ Book major tours (especially kayaking and ziplining) in advance, but always check for last-minute openings or waitlists—they do add extra tours when they can.
