Red River Gorge Sky Bridge Day Trip: Dog-Friendly Hike + Hidden Gems in Kentucky
Explore Red River Gorge Sky Bridge on a dog-friendly day trip through Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest. Hike under sandstone arches, drive through cave tunnels, and discover hidden gems with practical tips, faith reflections, and a travel opportunity to earn and explore more.
There’s something undeniably sacred about a day trip that surprises you—where the path is tougher than expected, the views are more breathtaking than described, and the memories made are far richer than planned. That’s exactly what happened on our visit to the Red River Gorge Sky Bridge in the heart of Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest.
From the moment we stepped onto the trail, it was clear this wouldn’t be an ordinary hike. My trusty sidekick (aka my sweet pup!) and I tackled steep stairs, ducked under fallen trees, and navigated some pretty intense metal-grate steps—too tricky for his little paws, so this dog mom had to carry him, but I didn’t mind. (Note to pet parents: bring a towel or booties if your dog struggles with open metal grates! And or be prepared to carry them!)
🏞️ Highlights from the Trail

- Sky Bridge Trail: A scenic loop with views that make every step worth it. You can walk over and under the natural sandstone arch—a stunning geological wonder.
- Steep Steps: The trail includes several steep staircases. Though well-maintained, they’re not pet-paw friendly. Small dogs may need to be carried.
- Cave Tunnel Drive-Thru: Yes, we literally drove through a mountain! Don’t miss the Nada Tunnel—an old logging passage turned scenic drive.
- Rescue Moments: We had the unexpected blessing of helping not one, but two stranded hiker groups. It reminded me how important community is out on the trail.
- Dog-Friendly Tip: Pack a collapsible water bowl, snacks, and a small blanket for your furry travel companion—they’ll thank you later.
🌿 Hidden Gems & Travel Tips

- Arrive early to beat the crowds and grab a spot in the Sky Bridge parking area.
- Go beyond the main trail—check out Chimney Top Rock or Creation Falls for extra adventure.
- Stay in nearby Slade, KY, or rent a rustic cabin tucked away in the forest. Many cabins are pet-friendly and offer stunning stargazing opportunities.
- Travel hack: Keep an old sheet or light towel in your car to cover sun-soaked seats or create shade for your pup during rest stops.
✨ Why This Trip Meant So Much
This wasn’t just another hike. It was a reminder that even on the tougher trails—when you’re carrying more than expected (sometimes literally)—there’s still beauty waiting around the bend.
Mr. Jocco Danger was a champ—tired but triumphant—and I was reminded again that the most meaningful adventures aren’t always the ones that go smoothly. They’re the ones where you show up, stay flexible, and soak in the joy despite the sweat and scrapes.
