A Glass Bridge, Doodle Drive-In, and One Joyful Pup: Our Spontaneous Day Trip to Nelson Kennedy Ledges

A dog in the passenger seat, windows down. Laughter in the air, mud on the trail. No rush. No plan. Just a bridge, a burger, and the kind of joy you canโ€™t schedule.

Because adventures are better with your best friend.

Thereโ€™s something beautiful about a spontaneous adventureโ€”especially when your co-pilot has four paws and a zest for the open road.

On this sunny afternoon, Jocco and I packed up the car for a last-minute getaway to Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park in northeast Ohio, a hidden gem known for its scenic rock formations and lush hiking trails. What we didnโ€™t expect was how many people would stop us just to meet Joccoโ€”and how much joy one unexpected trip could hold.

That face says it all. This was one of the happiest days we didnโ€™t plan for.

๐Ÿฅพ What to Know Before You Go

Curious paws meet rugged paths. This section of the trail had Jocco on high alertโ€”in the best way.

Located near Garrettsville, Ohio, Nelson Kennedy Ledges State Park is small but mighty, with winding trails, crevices, footbridges, and waterfalls. While itโ€™s known for its beauty, here are some real-world tips to help you plan a dog-friendly and safe visit:

๐Ÿš— 1. Get There Early

Parking is limited, and the lot fills up quicklyโ€”especially on weekends. Arriving early not only secures you a spot, but lets you explore before the crowds arrive.

๐Ÿพ 2. Dog-Friendlyโ€ฆ With Limits

While the park is technically dog-friendly, it comes with caution:

  • The entry area (before reaching the clear bridge) is not entirely pet-safe.
  • Expect steep rocks, wooden bridges with wide gaps, hills, roots, mud, and narrow crevices.
  • Even reaching the easy trail may involve a slightly sketchy approach with a dog.

Never push yourself or your dog beyond what feels safe.

๐Ÿšป 3. Limited Restrooms

There are only two restrooms totalโ€”one for each genderโ€”located at the parking area. Plan accordingly, especially if you’re traveling solo or with kids.

๐Ÿงบ 4. Bring Lunchโ€”Thereโ€™s a Picnic Spot

At the parking center, thereโ€™s a grassy, shaded picnic area perfect for enjoying lunch with your pup. We took a few moments there to relax, hydrate, and regroup before heading to our next stop.

๐Ÿ” Doodle Drive-In: The Best Surprise of the Day

Reviewing the drive-in menu together like true travel companions.

After hiking and exploring, we headed over to Doodle Drive-In, a local gem with a dog-specific menu that made Joccoโ€™s tail wag like crazy.

He was practically in the driverโ€™s seat, ready to order for both of us!

๐Ÿ“ Location: Streetsboro, OH

โœ… Classic drive-in experience
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Try their root beer float and grab a few dog treats to go!

โค๏ธ The Joy Is in the Detour

This trip wasnโ€™t tied to any grand plan. It was just me, my dog, the open roadโ€”and a reminder that joy often lives in the unplanned. Jocco lit up every moment, from hopping into the front seat like he owned the car, to meeting strangers who were clearly just as charmed by him as I am.

Whether you’re traveling solo, with your dog, or just looking for new places to explore near home, donโ€™t underestimate the power of a last-minute โ€œyes.โ€
